Children
are constantly developing and growing. They require early and periodic
preventive services to detect conditions that could cause life long
impairments if treatment does not begin promptly. In addition
to short-term treatment, EPSDT covers ongoing treatment that is
medically necessary for a child’s healthy growth and
development. Medical and dental screens, immunizations and education
are the primary components of the EPSDT Program.
The KIDMED screening component of EPSDT includes medical, vision,
hearing, and dental screens performed according to a periodicity
schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
This schedule identifies the type of screen the child needs according
to the child’s age. Screens can be performed in addition to
the prescribed schedule based on medical necessity. Immunizations are
also administered according to this periodicity schedule. Health
education is a vital part of the success of the EPSDT Program and is
tailored to the child’s age and health status at the time of
the screening service.
Medical conditions such as lead poisoning, sickle cell anemia,
developmental delays, nutritional deficiencies, and behavioral
disorders consistently result in successful outcome and cost effective
treatment plans when detected early.
